这是杰利柯创作的唯一一幅具有历史意义的绘画，表现当时的一次海难

美杜莎好是一艘巡洋舰，1816年在塞内加尔海滩搁浅，船上官员在不称职的保皇主义船长的带领下，独自乘坐救生艇逃生，而将剩下的86名船员遗弃在一条孤零零的木筏上，最后只有15名幸运者获救。
